TG Newsletter: Pug Rescue Run 2024

Pug Rescue Run

(24 November 2024)

After the virus that shall not be named we’ve developed a healthy appreciation for the sharing of all sorts of fluids again!  Liquid refreshments and bodily fluids alike.  The annual Tank Girls Pug Rescue Run had litres of it this year… sploosh!

It all started with the gathering of bean juice lovers at the open air Echt Coffee in Pierre Van Ryneveld where cyclists, doggy runners and dodgy looking bikers gathered to pay homage to the little bean that makes us get up… and go💩!  It was just a little dump… I mean jump… to the left… and a lickety-split to the right.

This motley crew zoomed off down the R21 with the bikes loaded to capacity with donations for the little squashies we were going to visit at Pug Rescue South Africa in Benoni.

No sooner had we entered the gates with our full arms; when we were welcomed with wide open arms, wads of hair, folds of skin and snuffling snot noses.  Behold the Pugglesberg boys choir waiting for a biscie and a lick.

The pug-crawl race started soon after the formalities were over and Lyneane soon worked out the best strategy to get her puggle to the finish line.

Meanwhile – Crispy had stopped off for a quick back, neck and shoulders!

The snot and spit started flying and Willepiet flew off - bodily fluids aren’t for the squeamish!

Despite stiff competition from Andrea, Willepiet redeemed herself in the wagging tongues competition and licked all the other competitors winning it hands down… ahem, so to say 👅

Do yourself a favour and go visit this model rescue centre.  It’s an enterprise that makes your mouth hang open in amazement at what owners Malcolm and Cheryl Gaw manage to achieve.  Last year I remember visiting just under 100 pugs and the centre had just received a donation of land adjacent to their centre.  This year the number of rescues has grown to an astonishing 201… gulp!  That costs R80k a month alone just on food… then not to mention the vet’s bills of another R60k.

To accommodate all the extra rescues the donated land has already started being developed with neatly maintained areas fenced off for groups of dawgies and named in memory after some of their cherished rescues who have since crossed over the rainbow bridge.  Pickle the dwarf pug being the most famous and well-loved ❤️

By now we were all hot and sweaty and Mac the cross (not grumpy) bulldog needed some love, puddles and squirting.  We were up to the task and stripped off.

All the games had us working up a giant thirst and Cherly obliged with a blind Grumpy Pug wine tasting!  Booga’s buds were spot on.  These wines (no growls) are sold in conjunction with Liquor City and R2 from every bottle of this pawsitively delicious squished grape juice sold is donated to the centre!

Hans got lost during the ‘blind’ wine tasting 😊

Janine and Dave pitched up and pitched in! ✌️  Lyneane’s red shooters shot the lights out and proved to be the (n)emisis of many.

WillePiet found a mobile kennel but unfortunately it wouldn’t fit on the GeeEss.

The curly tails saying thank you for the cheque that was donated by:

Paw Print Pet Cremation

It will make a dent in the coffers!

The Tank Girls would like to raise a glass to thank everyone who made the effort and got covered in boogers, snot, mucus, spit, water, wine, upchuck and pink drinks at the Pug Rescue Run this year!
